History of Granby
Nathaniel Holcomb in “Sammon Brooke” built the first house in 1677 and two years later, land grants were given to 13 settlers. The settlers of Salmon Brook were traveling long distances to Simsbury to attend church and town lectures. In 1736, the General Assembly allowed the settlers to set up their own church society and churches were built where the largest group of people was living. These settlements were considered part of Simsbury until 1786 when the Town of Granby was incorporated. Granby was named after John Manners, the Marquees of Granby.
By 1819, the Town of Granby had 380 houses, 400 qualified voters, 4 companies of militia, and factories and mills were growing quickly. In 1858, East Granby separated from Granby leaving 1,720 people in the Town of Granby.
In 1932, Senator George P. McLean left in trust and endowed 4,200 wooded acres in Simsbury and Granby. The Salmon Brook Historical Society was formed in 1945 and now maintains the 1732 Rowe House, the 1790 Weed-Enders House, the 1870 Cooley School, and the 1914 Colton-Hayes Tobacco Barn and Museum. Today much of the past can still be seen in Granby. Family names can be traced back to the earliest times of the settlement are still present today; in fact, the ancestors of President Rutherford B. Hayes were from Granby.

Things to Do
Educational/Historic-
The Salmon Brook Settlement, which is maintained by the Salmon Brook Historical Society, offers a walk through four historic structures. Located at 208 Salmon Brook Street.
Holcomb Farm in West Granby was built in the 1700s and today is a learning center offering programs in the arts and nature, as well as trails, outdoor and indoor animals. Located on Simsbury Road~
The Granby Public Library is located in the Town Hall Complex at 15 North Granby Road. Open from 10am-9pm Monday through Thursday and open Friday 12pm to 5pm.
The Fredrick H. Cossitt Library is located in North Granby on North Granby Road.
Outdoor Activities-
Salmon Brook Park is 116 acre park with hiking trails, ball fields, basketball courts, playground, tennis courts, gardens, horse exercise area, a bocce court, and pond. It is home to the annual harvest holiday, summer concert series, and car shows. Located just south of Granby Center on Route 10/202.
 McLean Game Refuge has excellent hiking trails, cross country skiing, and certain trails are even approved for horses. Dogs must be on leash. No fishing or hunting allowed. Entrances on Route 10, Holcomb Road, and Simsbury Road. This is a favorite of ours!
Salmon Brook Watershed
Enders State Forest in West Granby is a wildlife sanctuary with a walking trail leading to beautiful waterfalls. Located on Route 219 (Barkhamsted Rd.)
Goddard Preserve Trail on Donahue Road is maintained by the Granby Land Trust.
Shopping-
Old Mill Pond Village Shops consist of 8 buildings up to 200 years old surrounded by a picturesque Mill Pond. Check out the Christmas Shop in the Forsyth Mill Buildings! Located Route 10 north of Granby Center.
The Salmon Brook Shops have gathered 34 dealers specializing in antiques, jewelry, books, etc. Located on Route 10. Open 6 days a week (closed Wednesday).

Granby Land Trust preserves Granby's Natural Heritage through the conservation of its scenic vistas, open space corridors, wildlife habitat, ecologically sensitive areas, and agricultural land. I recommend hiking the Goddard Preserve trail on Donahue Road.
The YMCA,located on Route 10 south of Granby Center, is a fabulous fully equipped workout facility including lap pool, multi-purpose pool, whirlpool, steam room, sauna, aerobics studio, 10,000 sq. ft. gymnasium, climbing wall, wellness center, locker rooms, teen center, community rooms, child care, Subway Café, St. Francis Care, and has children’s birthday facilities.
Farmington Valley Trails Council maintains and promotes the public use of the Farmington Valley Greenway, a relatively flat, paved trail for walking, jogging, rollerblading, biking, or cross country skiing. The trail is accessible in East Granby at Route 20 or Copper Hill Road.

The deadline for completing these obligations usually coincides with the actual closing. Many sellers barely make that deadline.
